L'Étang de Berre
L'Étang de Berre is the largest lake in Europe. Located near Marseille, this inland sea is surrounded by salt flats, a refinery, a hydroelectric dam, an ornithological park, an airport, and one of the busiest truck routes in the region. For almost a century, this area has been covered by industry, largely because of its central position between the sea, railroads, and the A7 highway, which link Marseille, Lyon, Montpellier, Nice, and Aix-en-Provence. The first families came here to find a job and a place to live. These communities grew to become the largest host location in Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, leading to more and more resort residencies and projects around the lake. Leisure activities and accommodation have been developing at the same time. Today, although petrol production has stopped, the airport is still the 4th biggest in France, while this place (Plan de Campagne) is the 1rst largest commercial area, with 40 million visitors per year and 200 thousand trucks crossing it each month.
This project, shot on a medium format film camera, follows the traces left behind by the disbanded industry and its impact, finding the line where beauty meets human footprints, through the 350 thousand residents who live there.
